Episode 5 with Mylène Gagné - Working with a Professional Soccer Team

In this episode, I chat with Mylène about her experiences in working with a professional soccer team. We discussed what it took to get there, highlights, challenges, and recommendations for other Athletic Therapists looking to work with a professional sports team, and we got a bit into imposter syndrome and being a female working with male coaches and male athletes (Molly Galbraith book).

Mylene is 26 years old and is currently working clinically as a Certified Athletic Therapist at n8 Chiropractic & Massage Therapy and at the Université de Saint-Boniface as one of the head Therapists for the teams.

She completed her bachelor of science in kinesiology degree at the University of Winnipeg in 2022 and went on to certify with the CATA that same year.

Mylene has always been a fan of sports, both watching and playing. She started playing soccer at the age of 5 and has gone on to play competitively in Winnipeg up until she was 18 and has continued to play for enjoyment on some co-ed teams Mylene has newly started playing futsal in a Women’s league and enjoys playing sports such as basketball, volleyball, and track and field, which she also did throughout high school.

With a passion and understanding of sports, and having experienced MSK injuries as an athlete, Athletic Therapy seemed like the perfect career path for her. Working with soccer athletes in particular has always been her biggest interest.

She had the privilege of working in a variety of sports through her practicums such as hockey, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and futsal.

On top of having experience working in university-level sports, Mylene also had the privilege to work for 2 years as an Assistant Athletic Therapist for the professional soccer team in Winnipeg, Valour FC.

Aside from the AT life, Mylene enjoys cooking, spending time with her family, going for walks, and keeping up with sports!
